There aren’t a ton of songs about style and fashion out there, but the ones that do exist are surprisingly good. Here are my five favorite songs with a sartorial theme.
1. Fashion by David Bowie
Gotta start out with David Bowie. Like all his other songs, he brings such a fun, quirky feel to “Fashion” with his “Turn to the left! Turn to the right!” directions during the chorus. Next time you’re stuck while standing in front of your closet, turn this gem on to help you feel inspired.
2. Lady in Red by Chris de Burgh
The year is 1997. The place is a high school gymnasium during prom. The girl is me, and I’m wearing a red slinky dress with bejeweled detail at the bust. The DJ plays “Lady in Red” and as I sway with my boyfriend, I think I might faint. This is the most romantic moment of my life–I literally have my own soundtrack. Ha! Yes, I took myself very seriously back in the day. BUT, I still love this song. And there’s hardly a woman out there that doesn’t look great in red.
3. Vogue by Madonna
Probably the best and most well-known song about fashion out there from one of the most fabulous fashion icons out there. Also…a GREAT workout song. Trying to lose a few or tone up for the summer skin-baring season? Put this song on your workout mix.
4. Sunglasses at Night by Corey Hart
5. Supermodel by RuPaul
The most fun song about fashion by far is RuPaul’s Supermodel. “You better work/Cover girl/Work it, girl/Give a twirl”–how can you not love these lyrics? The video is pretty fun too, if you can get over your jealousy that RuPaul makes one amazingly beautiful woman.
