Another round of new feature Spendy vs. Smart, which seeks to find you more economical versions of designer or expensive threads. This time we’re focusing on items you might find yourself in need of for the cooler fall weather. Happy shopping (and be sure to let us know in the comments if there is an article of clothing you’d like to see featured)!
Skinny Corduroy Pants
Last time a reader requested some cheap finds for slim leg corduroys. At left these 7 For All Mankind The Skinny Corduroy Pants – $178.00 are undoubtedly high quality and well-fitting, but they have a pretty hefty price tag, especially for corduroys. However, I’ve had good luck with the Ann Taylor brands of corduroys. These Loft Julie Skinny Corduroy Pants – $59.50 at right are an especially good deal, but they are pretty slim-fitting. The Ann Taylor version I personally own and they’re great. Not too tight, with a bit of stretch and lots of comfort at the waist, which is neither super low nor really high. If you go with the AT version, I’d recommend sizing up.
Leather Sleeve Top
Popping into some stores this past weekend, I noticed that leather-embellished garments were everywhere. Dresses with leather trim, sweaters with leather pockets, you name it. If you dig this look, the J. Crew Leather-sleeve Top – $148 at left might catch your eye. A much cheaper option (and animal-friendly) is the GUESS Faux Leather Trimmed T-Shirt – $34 at right.
I love how long the statement necklace trend is hanging on. Banana Republic is always a good resource for these pieces, like the Dahlia Burst Necklace – $89.50 at left. A slightly different variation from BaubleBar is the Aqua Jumbo Bloom Bib – $34. The BB version features two additional blossoms, and a more classic look, with rounded petals instead of BR’s spiky look. A great value.
Another case with these booties where I much prefer the cheaper version than the pricier version. At left, the Vince Camuto Vintage Leather Booties – $149 are actually not a bad price for real leather. But when the Fergalicious Women’s Lucid Bootie – $69.95 at right is so darling, why spend the extra money? I love that subtle strap detail and the more textured look to the material.
With so many dark colors like navy, grey, black, and brown, popular during the fall months, it’s nice to accessorize with a pop of color. And cashmere is the most luxurious way to do it. Soft, warm, and light as a feather. The Velvet Trish Cashmere Zip Cardigan – $370.00 is very expensive (though cashmere often carries a really big price tag). A much better deal (and a nicer silhouette) is the Pim + Larkin Boyfriend Cashmere Cardigan – $98. Yes, still a bit of a splurge, but if you take care of your clothing, this is a piece that will keep you in good stead for years to come.
